California Inland Fisheries Foundation, Inc., (CIFFI), is a volunteer operated, tax deductible 501 C3 non-profit foundation, incorporated in the State of California, dedicated to the enhancement of freshwater angling opportunities.  The cooperative efforts between CIFFI and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and many partners, provide necessary funding to sustain multiple species of fish in California’s lakes and reservoirs.  Founded in 1992, CIFFI is a success story in cooperative fishery management, beginning with Project Kokanee, and now providing assistance to many other projects.

Fisheries for NOW... and the Future!

The Department of Fish & Wildlife has conducted two Kokanee egg takes on the Little Truckee River, above Stampede Reservoir this season.  These two events have resulted in the collection of 1.1 million green eggs.  All eggs are currently incubating at the San Joaquin River Hatchery.  We anticipate one, maybe two, more take events to reach our egg allotment goal of 1.8 million green eggs. Based on fish counts at the last take event this goal should be achievable with in-state eggs.

Take 1: 09/28/21 - 175,608 eggs
Take 2: 10/05/21 - 944,400 eggs
                 Total - 1,120,000 eggs

The 2020 Kokanee egg take has been completed by the DFW.  All eggs were taken from the Little Truckee River, above Stampede Reservoir.  They conducted four egg take events this year.  All eggs were transported to San Joaquin Fish Hatchery for incubation to eyed stage. At eyed stage, eggs will be portioned between American River and San Joaquin Hatcheries were they will be incubated to hatching and released next spring (2021) as fingerlings.

  Date Green Eggs Taken
Take #1 9/24 182,700
Take #2 10/1 333,270
Take #3 10/8 441,600
Take #4 10/15 358,800
  2020 Total 1,316,370

FROM CDFW: 09/01/21 - To reduce the spread of COVID-19, and to preserve the health of CDFW employees who are performing essential state operations, the Department will not be requesting volunteers for this year’s Kokanee egg take. Hopefully we can utilize volunteers during next year’s egg take operations.
