Egg Harvesting & Updates

2010 - Working with members of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, volunteers from California Inland Fisheries Foundation, Inc., (CIFFI) and Kokanee Power, collected 1.6 million kokanee eggs this year.  The first collection on Wednesday, October 6, at Taylor Creek at Truckee produced 300,000 eggs.  This was followed up by another egg-take on Tuesday, October 12, which produced approximately 1.3 million eggs.  The DFG feels this will be adequate to stock lakes this coming year.

CIFFI began Project Kokanee in 1992 when it appeared funding for kokanee planting by the DFG would be discontinued.  This successful cooperative effort between a non-profit organization and a government agency has made it possible to stock well over 20 million kokanee, planted for anglers to enjoy in the State.  Kokanee eggs are collected in the fall, and fry are planted into lakes in May or June.  Spawning naturally is not successful because of fluctuating water levels in most of our lakes and reservoirs.
