April 16, 2011 – Collins Lake – The Fifth Annual CIFFI Collins Lake Family Fun Derby was a great success. A record turnout of eager anglers – including 33 youth anglers made for a great family fishing day. Anglers saw a wide spectrum of success. Huge trout, recently released from the pens, showed up in creels across the board – with the largest trout tipping the scales at over seven pounds! CIFFI wishes to thank the sponsors of the derby – Collins Lake Resort and Johnson Outdoors.
Collins Lake Resort provided great support for this event and CIFFI wishes to thank them for hosting our annual derby at Collins Lake. CIFFI and Collins Lake have partnered together by funding and supporting 6 CIFFI trout pens at the lake. By the size of trout bagged at the derby – it was evident that anglers benefit from the strong planting program that is in place.
Tri-tip and all the fixing’s was provided by Buckhorn Catering. The meal, was topped off with green salad and beans - no one went home hungry. After the enjoyable meal, many and had an opportunity to be a part of the prize raffle that totaled more than $3000.
Fish of all sizes came in – keeping Weigh master Larry Boswell and his comrades busy tallying the fish. The big fish award went to George Harrison who bagged a beautiful trout that weighed in at 3 ¾ pounds - he took home $290 for his efforts – the biggest trout of the day was caught by an angler who did not buy into the big fish side pot – thus relinquishing big fish honors to Mr. Harrison. The blind bogey award of $300 went to Gary Anderson – he was closest to the selected weight of 42.82 ounces.
CIFFI wishes to thank all of the participants who spent their Saturday on the water supporting CIFFI’s fund raising efforts at Collins Lake.
Funds generated by CIFFI’s derbies go directly to fund the improvement of fisheries and educational endeavors throughout California. Since 1992, CIFFI - Project Kokanee - has partnered with the California Department of Fish and Game to fund the continued planting of kokanee salmon, installation of rearing pens and support of fisheries in California’s lakes.
