Spawning operations will occur in the Little Truckee River upstream of Stampede Reservoir. They will be on Thursdays each week for 3 weeks and are expected to begin October 8.
Actual dates will be dependent on fish numbers and ripeness, but the current, intended schedule is Oct 8, Oct 15, and Oct 22.
- Collection site: work site is approximately 5,900’ in elevation; from the trailhead, it is a 2-mile road to the collection site requiring four-wheel drive and high clearance. We can carpool from the trailhead if needed.
- Staffing needs: a volunteer agreement (provided) will need to be signed on site before starting operations
- Tasks:
- Electrofishing: many people are needed per day to assist in the collection and delivery of fish from the river to the spawning stations.
- Physical requirements: ability to wade in unstable rocky river environments; ability to walk over rough and uneven terrain; ability to repeatedly bend, lift, twist, and carry 40 pounds.
- Fish checks: 3 people are needed per day to assist in the checking of adipose fin clips and coded-wire tags of each kokanee.
- Physical requirements: ability to walk over rough and uneven terrain; ability to bend, lift, and carry 25 pounds repeatedly; fewer physical requirements than electrofishing.
- Time expectations: meet at 07:00 at the trailhead (link to google map), expect at least 5 hours of operations.
- Gear: waders and wading boots required that are clean from aquatic invasive species; wear layers and sun protection; bring food and water. Rubber fishing gloves and fish handling gloves will be provided.
